TERRAE OMAN

Maker: Carsten Niebuhr Published in Copenhagen (Kingdom of Denmark) Copper-plate engraving 1185–86 AH/1772 CE (al-Busaid Dynasty) Terrae Oman, one of the few early printed maps devoted to Oman, was produced by Carsten Niebuhr and published in the book Beschreibung von Arabien in Copenhagen in 1185–86 AH/1772 CE. Niebuhr, a remarkably conscientious and accurate observer, was recruited by the Lutheran University of Göttingen in Germany to serve as the land surveyor and cartographer for a scientific expedition to the Arabian Peninsula conceived by Fredrick V of Denmark and his foreign minister, Count Bernstorff.

Maker: John Murray after J.R. Wellsted Published in London (United Kingdom) Copper-plate engraving 1252–53 AH/1838 CE (al-Busaid Dynasty) James Raymond Wellsted (1219–57 AH/1805–42 CE) was a second lieutenant in the Indian navy who travelled extensively in the Arabian Peninsula in the 1830s CE. Wellsted has left unbiased accounts of Oman’s culture, customs, religion and geography in his Travels in Arabia, Volumes I and II (published in 1253–54 AH/1838 CE) and Travels in the City of the Caliphs along the Shores of the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean (published in 1255–56 AH/1840 CE).
