Terrae Oman, one of the few early printed maps devoted to Oman, was produced by Carsten Niebuhr and published in the book Beschreibung von Arabien in Copenhagen in 1185–86 AH/1772 CE. Niebuhr, a remarkably conscientious and accurate observer, was recruited by the Lutheran University of Göttingen in Germany to serve as the land surveyor and cartographer for a scientific expedition to the Arabian Peninsula conceived by Fredrick V of Denmark and his foreign minister, Count Bernstorff.
