The National Museum Hosts the “National Symposium on Documenting Omani Astronomical Heritage”
The National Museum hosted on Thursday, February 27, 2025, the “National Symposium on Documenting Omani Astronomical Heritage” proceedings in collaboration with the Oman Society of Astronomy and Space. The event took place under the patronage of His Excellency Salem bin Mohammed al-Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Museum. A group of researchers and enthusiasts of astronomical heritage attended the event.
The symposium included three scientific sessions that reviewed the agricultural astronomical heritage, the maritime astronomical heritage, and the astronomical calculations and manuscripts.
The symposium aimed to provide a live platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences on how to preserve and document the astronomical heritage, which is an essential part of Oman’s rich history. It focused on the importance of preserving this astronomical heritage within the framework of Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes “preserving, documenting, and globally disseminating heritage.
The symposium concluded with a set of recommendations, including emphasizing the importance of national initiatives to document Omani astronomical heritage, widely disseminate related research, incorporate Omani astronomical heritage into educational curricula to raise astronomical awareness among future generations, and strengthen the Sultanate of Oman’s position in the international astronomical arena.
