The Civilisation in the Making Gallery sheds light on some examples of local architectural heritage from the 3rd millennium BCE (Civilisation of Magan) to the modern times covering more than 5000 years. This heritage includes archaeological features and other sites and buildings of historic, artistic, intellectual, social or technical significance.
This gallery comprises six sections. The first one focuses on the Bahla Fort and Oasis, the first site in Oman to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1407−08 AH/1987 CE. The second section describes the main historical political capitals of Oman (Sohar, ar-Rustaq, Nazwa and Muscat). The third section is dedicated to the architecture of forts and castles in Oman, of distinctive architectural features and historic uniqueness, while the fourth section focuses on rural palaces and fortified houses. The fifth section illustrates types of residential houses in the different parts of Oman, and the last one expresses the aesthetics of the traditional architecture in Oman.
